Notting Hill Carnival: How to stay safe

We are looking forward to Notting Hill Carnival which is taking place on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August 2024! The carnival is known for celebrating the rich Caribbean culture in London through music, dance, and culture. We wanted to share some information about how to keep well and enjoy the event.

What is Notting Hill Carnival?

The first Notting Hill Carnival began in 1966 to celebrate freedom and Caribbean culture through a unique parade that showcases creativity, cultural heritage and music. It is now one of the most anticipated events of the summer.

This fantastic event is organised by Notting Hill Carnival Ltd and supported by the councils of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea.

How can I stay safe during carnival?

  1. Stay Hydrated

Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water because it can get quite hot and busy during carnival.

  1. Wear comfortable clothes

Wear comfortable (but colourful) clothes because the parade is 3.5 miles long and starts at 10am. So avoid wearing something that is too precious to you because it might be ruined by the end of the day.

  1. Plan your route using the official Carnival Map from Trippin’

Trippin’ has created the official carnival digital map which works even when there is no signal. They have signposted every sound system, stage, cultural site and safer space with a pin drop.

  1. Always stay with people that you know

Mobile phone networks go down so it is important to stick with people that you know, use a map if you are unfamiliar with the area and decide on a meeting point in case you lose each other.

  1. Plan your exit ahead of time

During the day, most underground stations are exit only so plan your route in advance. The police may reopen or close the stations on the outer perimeters depending on crowds. The important thing is to get out of the main carnival area to the back streets before 7pm so you don't get stuck in the crowds.

  1. Enjoy the day!

This is one of the most exciting and vibrant weekends of the year, packed with music, dancing, food and more so make sure to not miss it!
