Powered wheelchair users: have your say

The Wheelchair Alliance would like to understand whether powered wheelchair users are aware of the guidance which regulates where powered wheelchairs can be used in outdoor areas. Take their survey today.

Changes to powered wheelchair guidelines

In early 2024 the Department for Transport altered the classification guidance for powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters, adding 'Out of Class' to the Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 definitions that had been in place for some time.

The Wheelchair Alliance believe that this may have an unintentional impact on powered wheelchair users. In response, the Alliance has sent an open letter about this to the Minister of State for Transport and submitted a freedom of information request for information. They are also leading several stakeholder events and will be requesting a review of the actions.

The changes are based around the weight, width and speed of powered wheelchairs and this has implications on where people can use it. However, the survey does not expand on this because it aims to understand people’s current knowledge even if they have not looked at the changes.

How can I take part?

The closing date for the survey is 18 November and the responses will add evidence to discussions that The Wheelchair Alliance will have with the Department for Transport in the near future regarding the alteration to the classification of wheelchairs and its impact on wheelchair users.
