‘Don’t presume we are fine just because we look OK’: The mental health needs and experiences of young people (aged 18-25) in Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea

In this joint project, Healthwatch Westminster and RBKC examine the mental health needs and experiences of young people aged 18-25 who live or use services in the bi-borough.

We heard from a total of 89 young people about their mental health experiences and perspectives of mental health services through our surveys and focus groups. We received input from young people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, as well as people who identify as LGBQT+, neurodiverse, not in employment, education or training (NEET), veterans, ex-offenders, military personnel, homeless, and individuals without a support network.

We found high rates of poor mental health, mixed perspectives on current provision of mental health services and support, and a range of factors that increase young people’s vulnerability to poor mental health. We additionally co-developed recommendations with our young participants about ways to improve mental health and tailor services to better meet young people’s mental health needs.

We aim to continue sharing our input surrounding young people’s mental health services in the bi-borough through targeted community outreach, our Young Healthwatch network, partnerships, and our Advisory Board.
